Audi Quattro® All-Wheel Drive (AWD)—You Know It’s Important, But Do You Know Why?

Audi quattro®—if you’re an Audi fan, you’re definitely familiar with the term, you probably even know it denotes Audi’s all-wheel drive system for a given model, but how much do you really know about Audi quattro® all-wheel drive? For example, is there only one system, or are there many? Answers to this and other questions found below!

How Does Audi’s quattro® all-wheel drive (AWD) System Work?

Audi’s quattro® all-wheel drive system is not a one-size-fits-all type deal; instead, Audi has crafted a unique quattro® system to the specific vehicle it’s intended for, but they all function, more or less, the same way, though, of course, there are quirks to each:

  • Audi’s quattro® system is able to detect traction and slippage, rerouting torque through a “Crown Gear” differential to the wheel that has the most traction, and taking it from the wheels that are slipping. This is where the superior traction comes from—smart applications of torque and power.

If there’s one thing most of us can agree on, it’s the importance of safety. Audi is known for its strong safety systems, and while the quattro® all-wheel drive system is technically part of performance, it offers superior traction in bad weather and it boosts your confidence as a driver—of that doesn’t make you safer, we don’t know what does. Good thing for Hartford area drivers, the Audi lineup offers quattro® on all its models, albeit different versions specified to different vehicle types, which means the performance vehicles get a different quattro® than the SUVs, but they all benefit from the available technology!
